What should be inventoried before replacing a PRI?
Document every billing telephone number, direct number, toll-free number, fax line, alarm or elevator line, call path and contract before choosing a replacement. A carrier invoice alone may not reveal every dependency.
- PRI circuit identifiers and account numbers
- All numbers and their current destinations
- Main greeting, hunt groups, queues and after-hours routing
- Fax, alarm, elevator, paging and analog-device requirements
- Contract end dates and early-termination terms
- Current network, firewall, switching and power backup
Is SIP trunking the same as a cloud phone system?
No. SIP trunks typically connect calling service to an existing compatible phone system, while a cloud phone platform moves more of the call-control function to the provider. The right path depends on the useful life of the current system, integrations, administration and migration goals.
How should network readiness be checked?
Measure latency, jitter, packet loss and upload stability during real operating hours. Confirm firewall behavior, voice prioritization where appropriate, switching, cabling, power backup and an alternate internet path if calls are business-critical.
What belongs in the cutover plan?
Use a written plan with owners, dates, test cases, escalation contacts, rollback decisions and customer communications. Configure and test temporary numbers before porting the production numbers.
- Approve the final number and user inventory
- Build and test call flows before the port date
- Confirm emergency calling and address records
- Schedule the port around business risk
- Keep the old service available until acceptance criteria are met
- Test inbound, outbound, transfers, voicemail, queues and failover
When can the old PRI be disconnected?
Disconnect only after every required number and workflow has passed acceptance testing, billing responsibility is clear and any retained analog services have a documented replacement. Closing the old account too early can make recovery harder.
